With the number of COVID-19 cases in La Crosse County climbing rapidly, the county is busy keeping a profile of who’s getting the virus.

Members of the county board heard Thursday night that 57 per cent of the county’s coronavirus patients became sick through close contact with others.

Another 27 per cent got the virus through ‘community spread.’

Jane Klekamp, the associate county administrator, says the majority of recent cases involves patients in their 20’s, who are often in essential jobs.

Klekamp quotes county health figures in saying that 56 per cent of the county’s cases have been among La Crosse residents.

People from Holmen and Onalaska account for another 35 per cent.

Klekamp also says 15 per cent of the spread apparently has come through travel, which is why the health department is discouraging all but essential travel for now.
