Well cleanup funding considered by La Crosse council
The city of La Crosse could soon approve money to clean up chemical contamination in two city wells at the airport.
The finance committee meets Thursday, and is considering spending $150,000 on preparing a work plan and remedial action for the well clean-up.
Industrial chemicals known as PFAS have been detected in Municipal Well 23 on French Island, and it’s believed that firefighting foam used by the airport was the source of the pollution.
Well 24 also would be included in remedial efforts.
Under the city plan, $82,500 would come from water utility funds and $67,500 from the airport operating budget.
