Boating season may be winding down in the area, but the dive rescue team in La Crosse County remains ready whenever it might be needed.

Team spokesman Shawn Mahoney told a county committee that 2019 has been a less hectic year than the previous one, since the unit received only eight direct pages.

The county divers also assist the La Crosse fire department divers, as well as groups in surrounding counties.

There are 22 active members on the county team, but Mahoney says he could use more volunteers, male and female.

With the help of a $25,000 grant, the group just bought a used truck to replace one it had been using on calls for almost a decade.

Mahoney said the divers, this year, have recovered a vehicle, a fisherman stuck in the mud, kayaks on the La Crosse River, and a sinking boat on the Mississippi River.
