A fire on French Island, reportedly fueled by wood from railroad ties, kept local firefighters on the scene throughout the day on Tuesday.

The fire at the Omaha Tie Yard appears to have started around 1:30 a.m. The Omaha company sells recycled rail supplies, including railroad ties and wood chips.

La Crosse and Onalaska fire crews were among the departments that responded to the blaze. By afternoon, there were still flames at the scene, but the fire was not as widespread, and was not giving off thick smoke seen earlier in the day.

No injuries were reported, and investigators were still looking into the cause of the large fire.

I’ll bet it was arson. Maybe by homeless or drug addicts.
