One year after major flooding in Coon Valley, and other parts of the region, many people may still be cleaning up damage.

Getting flood insurance is being promoted by FEMA as a high priority for those who live in flood-prone areas.

Jim Sink, the head of regional flood insurance for the region of FEMA, which includes Wisconsin, said insurance can be provided to homeowners in and out of floodplain areas, if local communities participate in specific insurance programs.

Sink says that about 30 percent of the claims submitted to FEMA come from outside high-risk areas.

The FEMA spokesman said flooding over the past year in Wisconsin has led to a higher demand for flood insurance around the state.
