Flood relief fund approved by La Crosse council

The city of La Crosse is ready to provide flood relief to families that have gotten water in their basements too often.

The city council has voted to offer up to $20,000 in funding to any family which might want to move a house, or fill in a basement.

Mayor Tim Kabat says it’s a way to help out families that may not qualify for federal disaster money.

The mayor says he has seen more interest from the public in flood relief since the council decided to make slight changes in the program.

In other council action on Thursday, La Crosse approved an amendment to a pact providing sewer treatment to La Crescent.

Both La Crescent and Onalaska have been calling for a metropolitan sewer district for the area, and Mayor Kabat says hearings on the idea are expected soon.
