La Crosse turns down metro sewer district

The latest government feud between La Crosse and Onalaska goes on, as the La Crosse city council rejects a metropolitan sewer district favored by Onalaska.

The two cities have a sewer agreement which runs out in a few months, and Onalaska has suggested a 20-year agreement.

But La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat says the current system already serves a number of cities, and “there is no benefit for La Crosse to, in essence, relinquish oversight of our wastewater treatment plant.”

One area of dispute has been who pays for the treatment, with arguments that cities outside of La Crosse don’t pay enough of the operating cost.
