The Onalaska fire chief pleaded not guilty on Thursday to traffic charges, resulting from an arrest last month.

Billy Hayes submitted the plea in writing, so he did not have to appear in La Crosse County traffic court.

Hayes was charged with speeding and driving drunk, after being pulled over by police last month.

The case could now be scheduled for trial.

Hayes reached an agreement with the city of Onalaska to serve a five-day suspension. The suspension is over his allegedly trying to use his position with the city to get out of the charge at the time it happened.
