Wittenberg Park plan comes up for council vote this week

The idea of designating a north La Crosse park as surplus land is likely to be put to rest by the city council this week.

Following a ‘no’ vote last week by the city plan commission, the council finance committee voted Thursday to retain Wittenberg Park instead of trying to sell it.

City planner Jason Gilman explained to the committee that one goal was ‘to see if we could add value to the area that’s non-wetland.’

But Gilman says a potential developer wanted more land than just the 8-acre park located close to I-90.

He also says a geologist pointed to problems which might arise from filling land in that part of the city.

The full city council meets next Thursday night.
