Americans who might not know much about La Crosse could learn much more about the city in the next year, as a result of a national tourism promotion.

The Explore La Crosse agency hopes to reach beyond cities, such as Milwaukee and Minneapolis, to sell the region as a good place to enjoy water sports.

“It’s going to be a national campaign that people are going to be able to participate,” Explore La Crosse’s Brent Hanifl said.

The La Crosse convention bureau launched a national effort to give away a locally-built canoe in the ‘Boatload of La Crosse County’ campaign.

Hanifl wants to increase the number of visitors coming to the area for fishing and river travel.

“I think people just need to have that initial, sort of, visit, to realize what we have to offer,” Hanifl said.

Explore La Crosse recruited Sanborn Canoe of Winona to build a 14-foot wooden canoe that will be given as the grand prize at the end of the year-long promotion.
