In 2001, Michael Vernio agreed to be transported from Rochester, Minnesota to Trempeleau County, to face charges in a 1997 murder.  Vernio was considered a suspect in the shooting death of 74-year-old Aloyzie Przybilla.  Investigators said Vernio’s ex-girlfriend recalled that Vernio wanted to rob Przybilla’s home, and admitted to shooting him there.  Vernio was acquitted of murder and burglary, but was found guilty of conspiring to commit robbery and burglary.

The Onalaska Library Commission was busy trying to decide whether the new public library building, just over a decade old, needed to be expanded because of heavy demand.  The commission was asking the Onalaska Historical Society to move out of the library by the following May.

Leithold Music and Ross Furniture in La Crosse were holding a joint sale on grand pianos at the Ross showroom on State Street…now the Charmant Hotel.  Used grand pianos were priced as low as $3500, but a new Yamaha baby grand could be had for just under $13,000.  That was 17 years ago, 2001, yesterday in La Crosse.
