Pool fight continues in La Crosse

Multiple groups fighting over Memorial Pool’s fate

There is clearly some disagreement over the fate of the nearly 80-year-old Memorial Pool.

Earlier this month, the city’s Historic Preservation Commission unveiled an 11th-hour attempt to get the pool, near the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, designated a historic landmark.

That status would make closing and replacing the pool much more difficult.

Now, the city’s parks department plans an open house for Tuesday at the pool – the stated purpose of which is to show off the pool’s need for “extensive repairs and upgrades.”

Meanwhile, a neighborhood group is working fervently to keep the pool open, while the city’s parks board has recommended closing it for the summer.
