Kwik Trip is the first convenience store chain to get a national award for selling healthy foods, but it’s not likely to be the last.

The Partnership for a Healthier America, based in Washington D.C., has taken notice to what the convenience store has done in handing out the Apple Award to Kwik Trip for stocking more fruits and vegetables at its stores. Larry Soler with the Washington D.C., group went to Steve Koehr at Kwik Trip headquarters for ideas.

“What Steve helped us do is introduce the model we’ve been using with Kwik Trip to others within the convenience store community,” Soler said. “What we’ve done since our work with Kwik Trip is sign nearly a half dozen other chains that have included similar commitments as we do with Kwik Trip.”

Loehr says Kwik Trip benefits from having its own bakeries and kitchens, which increase the availability of fresh and healthy products. He also expects more fruits and vegetables to be offered soon.
