Staffers not excited about bill to allow guns on school property

Supporters want law in case they
inadvertently bring guns to school

Little surprise, probably, that you’re not seeing scores of superintendents lining up to support a proposal in Madison that would allow concealed-carry permit holders to legally carry on school grounds in Wisconsin.

“We don’t need more people carrying guns in school than law enforcement,” Onalaska superintendent Fran Finco said. “If you have to come into a school, you can make provisions to leave your weapon somewhere, if there’s a rule about not having guns in school.”

He denies the assertion by supporters of the bill that parents need something like it in place to avoid inadvertently breaking the law when they have a legally carried weapon while picking up their kid from school.

Finco says permit holders can probably figure out a way so that, even if they’re picking up and dropping off from school, they’re not doing it with a gun on school property.
