The La Crosse City Council will be one member short toward the end of next month.

District 5 Rep. Jenasea Hameister announced her resignation Tuesday in a letter to Mayor Mitch Reynolds and council president Chris Kahlow.

Hameister

Hameister will be moving out of the district. Her last day on council will be May 21. Her term runs through May of 2027. District 5 covers the area around UW-La Crosse.

“My time spent working on the council has been incredibly impactful for me and I have valued every minute working with everyone associated with the city,” Hameister said in the letter. “I cannot overstate how welcoming and helpful staff have been during my time here. It has been a pleasure representing such a vibrant, service-forward city.

“Additionally, I’m excited to take what I’ve learned from this experience and apply it elsewhere in my life.”

Hameister served on the City Plan Commission and the Judiciary and Administration Committee.

No word yet from the city or the council on whether someone would be appointed to the position or through a special election, perhaps during the August primary.

Plus, when the deadline to essentially apply for the position would be for either of those options.

The last time the council had someone resign — two years ago, in the same district — the city took applications for a month, then appointed a replacement about three weeks after that.
