A charitable group in La Crosse is wrapping up its first-ever “virtual” campaign to collect donations for families that are short on food.

The Hunger Task Force (HTF) of La Crosse is looking for last-minute gifts of food and money before the Virtual Food Drive ends on New Year’s Eve.

“We’re looking for those things that can make a meal, so pasta and pasta sauce, canned tuna,” Task Force executive director Shelly Fortner said Tuesday on WIZM’s La Crosse Talk.

On the food bank’s website, visitors can donate money to different food categories, such as canned fruit, cereal or pasta meals. For example, you could donate $25 to buy 24 cans of tuna, or $250 to provide 110 jars of peanut butter.

The Virtual Food Drive began Nov. 1 and ends Sunday.

The HTF is the only food bank between Madison and Rochester, distributing goods to 120 meal sites, food pantries, youth and backpack programs in the region.
