Inclusive recreation specialist to be hired by La Crosse
The city of La Crosse is looking for a full-time coordinator for Inclusive Recreation programs.
The new position has been approved by the city council.
Park and rec director Jay Odegaard said the inclusion specialist will work on recreation programs for seniors, and individuals with special needs.
“A big part of this position is working with our Special Olympic athletes in the special recreation programs, which La Crosse has one of, if not the largest Special Olympic programs in the state,” Odegaard said.
Odegaard added that the new employee also will be busy with projects involving indigenous peoples, which could include public art displays in the city’s parks.
He told WIZM that a steady employee is needed to handle activities that usually have been performed by temporary workers or part-timers.
“Using the seasonal staff, they come and go, and a lot of times those relationships have to be rebuilt,” Odegaard said, “so having somebody here full-time, really I think is going to be beneficial.”
The new position is currently being advertised.
