As I See It

Actions have consequences, except for the politicians

We learn early on that there are consequences to our actions. Misbehave, and you will be punished. Of course that is not true for everyone, like those in positions of power. The ones who make the rules, to benefit only themselves. The latest case in point involves a ruling by a Dane County judge that involve public records. The judge ruled that Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman violated the state’s open records law when they refused to turn over public records to the news media and others. The groups had to sue to find out how Gableman was spending the tax dollars Vos gave him to investigate the 2020 presidential election. Gableman’s investigation cost taxpayers almost $700,000 and the law says we have a right to know how that is being spent. Vos and Gableman refused for months to turn over those documents. The judge ruled that the two public officials violated the spirit and the letter of the law and ordered them to pay the attorney’s costs, and fined each of them $1000. But guess who is going to pay that? You and I. Wisconsin taxpayers. Because of the rules they created, our elected officials have things set up so even when they break the law, and get fined, taxpayers will foot the bill. So much for consequences. At least for those who make the rules.
