When La Crosse firefighters checked out a smoke alarm at a house last night, they found the fire was already out when they arrived.

But a woman’s body was in the house.

Investigators say the woman was the owner of that house in the 400 block of South 22nd Street.  She’s identified as Peggy Crowley.

It hasn’t been determined how she died, or how the fire started.  There was heavy fire and smoke damage inside the building.

The smoke detector went off in the house, just before 8 p.m.
