Gundersen helped by millions in grants

Some small communities in the Coulee Region might not have access to certain high-quality medical care, if it weren’t for donations to area hospitals.

That’s a message Gundersen Health System is sending this week, thanking donors for over $5 million in grant money given during 2020.

“If we don’t get involved in the smaller communities, they’ll be dominated by the larger communities,” said Dr. Stephen Shapiro, head of the Gundersen Medical Foundation. “Those are people who have different life experiences, different environments than our patients are in. We want to try to bring care back into our community.”

Shapiro says responses to COVID-19 and providing family medical care are made possible through grants, which helps Gundersen avoid increasing the costs of routine care while operating on a “thin margin.”
