Eagle may be back in Riverside Park by early summer
A well-known work of art will be coming back to La Crosse’s riverfront soon…and we’re not talking about Hiawatha.
The city arts board has learned that the eagle sculpture by Elmer Petersen is expected to return to Riverside Park sometime early in the summer, after several months of restoration.
“Mr. Eagle was in a little rougher shape than they first thought when they took him down,” said Jim Flottmeyer from the city park department, “so I don’t think we’re gonna make Memorial Day, but it’s not too far off of that.”
The metal eagle and its tree-like pedestal were removed from the park in September for repair work. Flottmeyer says it’s going to look “really great” when it returns.
The bird, grasping a fish and perched on a tree trunk, was first installed on the La Crosse riverfront in 1987.
