A rural Cashton man died while cutting a tree west of Ontario Wednesday afternoon.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office said Raymond Miller, 37, was cutting a 60-foot Red Oak tree in the Town of Whitestown when it became caught in another tree while it was falling. The bottom of the tree kicked out towards Miller.

A witness said he was trying to escape the falling tree, but was pinned underneath. That witness rushed to his aid and cut the tree from him. That person also tried life-saving measures before running to get help.

The dispatch center received the call around 2:22 p.m. Ontario EMS arrived on the scene followed by Gundersen Air. Emergency personnel tried, but could not save Miller. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
