New-style buses headed to MTU, while old buses get pandemic makeover
New city buses are on the way to the streets of La Crosse.
Next week, the city council will be asked to buy two hybrid buses for the MTU, that can operate with gas or electric fuel.
Transit director Adam Lorentz says the transition away from fossil-fueled buses is progressing, as he expects the MTU to get 10 new buses over the next 18 months.
The city council finance committee voted on Thursday to buy the hybrids, and to authorize new equipment to keep bus drivers and passengers safe from the coronavirus.
The equipment would include barriers, hands-free ticketing systems, and air filtration devices.
The MTU has experienced large declines in ridership and revenue since the COVID outbreak began.

So in order to fight declining sales, the MTU is going to buy 2 new busses and installing protective equipment for existing busses that will be totally irrelevant in a few months? Awesome! Way to continue La Crosse’s tradition of pissing away money on the unnecessary. ???
