La Crosse River gets sewage overflow

City crews in La Crosse had to shut off a broken sewer main on Saturday, after about 42-thousand gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the La Crosse River.

The pressurized pipe reportedly broke on Saturday morning, and the flow of sewage was noticed later in the day by a person walking near the river at Riverside Park.

Permanent repairs to the broken main could be made this week.

The city estimates that the break occurred early Saturday morning, and was discovered around noon.

The break was shut off within about three hours.

La Crosse’s board of public works could discuss the emergency at its regular weekly meeting on Monday.
