La Crosse clerk says absentee ballots have been sent out

Look in the mail for your absentee ballot. 

If you live in La Crosse County, and have asked for a ballot, it should be on the way to your door. 

County clerk Ginny Dankmeyer says all 17,000 ballots requested so far were sent out by Thursday, meeting state and federal deadlines. 

Sixty-four thousand people in La Crosse County voted in the last presidential race, in November of 2016, representing an 82 per cent turnout. 

Dankmeyer says if you get your ballot back to her staff any time before the polls close on November 3rd, it will be counted. 

Concerns about the safety of voting by mail have led to suggestions, from the president or others, that people try voting twice to test the system: once by mail, and then again in person at the polls. 

Dankmeyer says, don’t try it.

She says voting twice is “highly discouraged…as we have procedures in place that will prevent you from doing that, and anybody who attempts to or is caught voting twice will be turned over to the DA for possible charges.”

Dankmeyer says the addition of more ballot-counting machines, especially for absentee votes, makes her optimistic that vote totals will be available on election night.
