The city of La Crosse is celebrating successes in providing good housing for local families.

Community development administrator Caroline Gregerson tells city council members that La Crosse has been able to partly or fully fund nearly 100 new or rebuilt homes in the last five years for families at lower income levels.

Gregerson says just In the year 2016, the city helped finance 32 home-building projects, mainly in the Poage and Washburn neighborhoods, with 95 in all built between 2015 and 2019.

Gregerson says the city has been able to get homeless veterans into housing, and reports that filling basements of frequently flooded homes on the north side is helping people remain in their houses.

Students from Central High School and Western Tech participate in some home rehab projects, and Gregerson says the construction work has given many of the students a new reason to stay in school.
