String of vehicle thefts and entries reported in La Crosse area

The La Crosse Police Department said there were three stolen vehicles, five vehicle entries, and other reports of suspicious activity Monday night into Tuesday during the overnight hours.

At least one stolen vehicle was recovered, according to La Crosse Police Officer Dustin Darling. He said most of the incidents happened on French Island by Nakomis Ave., but some occurred out of their jurisdiction in the Town of Campbell or La Crosse County.

“Often times, people are going to go out at night under the cover of darkness when they are gong to do their ‘car shopping,'” Darling said. “It can just be one individual making his or her way through the city.”

He recommended removing valuables from vehicles when possible and always locking doors.

“Usually it is a crime of opportunity,” Darling said. “That person will pull on a door, and if that door is open, it makes for easy pickings.”

Additionally, victims of theft could face a ticket. A City ordinance forbids leaving cars in public areas with the keys inside.

Darling said a person can call 911 if they see a theft in progress and keep a distance from the thief. Police ask for the best description and direction of travel if the suspect leaves.
