Hunger Task Force seeks donations to help dairy farmers

A severe drop in demand for milk and dairy products during the coronavirus outbreak led some farmers to dump excess supplies of milk that they had.

But food pantries in Wisconsin are working on ways to avoid future milk-dumping.

A Dairy Recovery Program has been started in the state, with the goal of finding uses for surplus milk.

Shelly Fortner from La Crosse’s Hunger Task Force asks people to donate money to the program, to help dairy farmers stay in business.

The Recovery Program hopes to raise $1 million, which would be matched by a private grant, to help dairy producers who have lost business during the COVID-19 shutdown.

The Task Force just completed a 7-week food drive in La Crosse which collected 68,000 pounds of food for area pantries.
