Democrats in the Wisconsin State Senate have chosen a new minority leader to succeed La Crosse’s Jennifer Shilling.

Senator Janet Bewley of Mason was chosen unanimously by the Democratic caucus.

Friday is Shilling’s last day as minority leader for the Senate, although she will complete her Senate term and is not running for re-election in the fall.

Shilling held the leadership post for five years.

Bewley has been in the Senate for six years, after serving two terms in the state Assembly, and her Senate district borders Lake Superior.
