La Crosse jail population continues to fall, according to plan

Social distancing is at work in the La Crosse County jail.

Compared to some recent months when the inmate population has gone over 200 at times, that number has dropped into the 70’s this week.

Jim Verse, the jail captain, says county law enforcement released some prisoners to supervision programs and county judges issued orders not to arrest people for non-violent crimes at this time.

Verse says in his two decades with the sheriff’s office, he doesn’t remember the jail population going this low, with only six new prisoners booked since last Friday.

The current law enforcement center opened in 1997.
