La Crosse lawmakers re-introduce water pollution notification bill
Quick notification about groundwater pollution hasn’t been happening in Wisconsin, according to State Rep. Jill Billings of La Crosse.
So, she’s co-sponsoring a bill to require the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources to tell county leaders about tainted groundwater within days after the pollution is confirmed.
Billings says the bill arose from a situation where La Crosse County tried to get a pollution report from the DNR.
“When the DNR was asked why they didn’t get that information out, they said it wasn’t in state statutes, it wasn’t part of their responsibilities,” Billings said.
Billings added that she and state Sen. Jennifer Shilling are re-introducing the Water Pollution Notification Act, after it stalled in the legislature in the last session.
