New tennis and pickleball courts planned at Green Island

The city of La Crosse is making plans to build new tennis courts, to fill a void left by the recent demolition of old courts near the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Parks and rec. supervisor Jared Flick said new indoor and outdoor courts for tennis and pickleball could be built at Green Island next year.

“Losing those 16 courts on La Crosse Street was something that the city struggles with right now,” Flick said. “We have a huge need and demand for a tennis-specific (court) in this area.”

Ten tennis courts would be built outdoors, with six more inside a bubble attached to the Green Island ice arena.

The project may cost more than $2 million.

Two public meetings on the Green Island project are planned this week.

One will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the south side neighborhood center. The second at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Black River Beach center near Rose Street.
