Hazmat crew burns off leaking gas from underground tank

La Crosse’s hazmat team is burning off some propane from a buried gas tank on the city’s south side.

A gas leak was reported to the fire department on Tuesday afternoon, in the area of 28th and Mesa Grande Place.

The hazmat workers decided that the best way to empty the tank would be to flare off the gas…and that could take many hours or days to complete.

Access to nearby Hintgen School was restricted yesterday, but this morning the fire department says the flaring will not disrupt traffic to Hintgen, or south-side bus routes.
