Salvation Army, La Crosse police offer weekend shelter from chilly conditions
There will be more room to sleep at the Salvation Army in La Crosse this weekend, to protect people from the severe cold weather.
The shelter on 8th Street added more beds yesterday, so up to 90 people can sleep there through from tonight Sunday night.
Salvation Army spokesman Nick Ragner said they expect the shelter to return to its 80-bed capacity on Monday, if the weather emergency is done by then.
La Crosse Police also will open the north-side community police center on St. James Street as a cold-weather shelter for the weekend.
The community room of the building will be used as a shelter from tonight through Monday morning, from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The Salvation Army, police and Catholic Charities will all collaborate on how to deal with those needed shelter over the next week.
