Franciscans and Mayo sign $37 million separation deal
An agreement announced a year ago between the Franciscan Sisters and Mayo Clinic will bring several millions of dollars in cash and property to the La Crosse order of nuns.
The reported total of the transaction, signed at the end of October, is around $37 million.
It was just before Thanksgiving of 2017 when the Franciscans announced they would separate from the Mayo medical center in La Crosse and Viterbo University.
FSPA spokeswoman Jane Comeau says the main piece of property the nuns will receive from Mayo is a parking lot on Market Street, near St. Rose Convent.
The payout from Mayo will be made over a 20-year period.
The deal was part of the original partnership agreement between Mayo and FSPA, approved in 1995.
