Group holding marijuana forum ahead of La Crosse County referendum on Nov. 6 ballot

Canada just legalized marijuana. Could Wisconsin be next?

Probably not any time soon, but La Crosse County voters will have a chance to make their voices heard on an advisory referendum Nov. 6.

For those not so sure what that would mean, the Coulee Recovery Center in La Crosse (map) is holding an informational forum on marijuana at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Director Cheryl Hancock said it’s an opportunity to learn more about the substance before the advisory referendum.

“One of our major roles is to provide prevention and education in the community,” Hancock said. “We’re hearing from folks that, they didn’t really know how to vote on the referendum question that’s going to be on the ballot and what did we think.”

Hancock said they have an instructor from Western Technical College along with two people with a law enforcement perspective.

Hancock added that while they don’t have a stated opinion, they do have clients that have dealt with marijuana.

“A percent of people who consume marijuana find that they have addiction related disorders,” Hancock said. “So, we are here and ready to provide support to those individuals.”
