La Crosse union official says decision reflects Wisconsin laws on worker rights

The vote was close, and the reactions predictable after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling siding with non-union government employees who don’t want to pay union fees.

The 5-to-4 decision in Janus v. AFSCME exempting non-union workers from paying union fees was applauded by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who says Act 10 already accomplished that.

However, regional AFL-CIO officer Bill Brockmiller of La Crosse says Act 10 hasn’t been the overwhelming success Walker suggests that it is, arguing that many teachers are leaving Wisconsin for jobs in Minnesota.

Brockmiller says the pool of potential teachers in Wisconsin is being drained, partly because of policies against collective bargaining.
