La Crosse man’s arrest for child porn charges highlights need for parent supervision of online activity

A 26-year-old La Crosse man was given 30 years in prison for traveling to Iowa with the intent to have sex with a minor.

Police said Carson Sibley posed as a female while trolling online video game sites, enticing minors to send him explicit photos.

Sergeant Tom Walsh with the La Crosse Police Dept. says there are warning signs your child might be targeted by a predator.

“If the kids are acting funny when they’re online or trying to hide things from you, it may be time to intervene or have a conversation,” Walsh said.

Walsh added that it takes a lot of work to stay ahead of child predators, who victimize people online, in part because of advancing technology.

“We’re made aware of it now but they’re already coming up with the next way to try and get around law enforcement,” Walsh said. “We’re constantly having to learn and train and stay on the cutting edge of the new apps and programs that are coming out.”

Before the latest charges, Sibley was already on probation for child porn charges.
