Flu hitting Wisconsin, most of U.S., hard this season
Wisconsin is among the 35 states experiencing widespread influenza cases. That means there are flu outbreaks in every region of the U.S., according to the CDC.
There has been over 750 hospitalizations in Wisconsin this year due to the flu.
The reported cases in Wisconsin are much higher than last year at this time. The outbreak has particularly impacted those aged 65 or older. That age group has accounted for two thirds of the hospitalizations.
“It’s hittin that group pretty hard but all age groups are affected to varying degrees,” Megan Mueller, an infection preventionist with Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, said.
Prevention is simple, beyond vaccination, which Mueller says there are plenty of, it’s basic care like washing your hands, covering your cough and staying home if you’re feeling sick.
“We stress being mindful about your symptoms … and not trying to expose anybody else,” Mueller said.
