Legion will have space in new building, but won’t be owners

By early 2019, La Crescent is expected to have a new community center and a 55-unit hotel on the site of the city’s American Legion hall.

The project has been on the drawing board for three years, and was officially announced on Wednesday.

The existing Legion hall off Highway 61 will be torn down early next year.

Businessman Dick Wieser says community centers in Caledonia and Spring Grove inspired him to come with the idea.

The specific hotel chain for the site has not been chosen yet.

The Legion will have its own space in the event center, but will not be an owner, so it won’t have to pay property taxes.
