Courthouse workers, local attorneys invited to participate

SPARTA, Wis. — Government employees around America are learning ways to respond in case a shooting incident happens where they work.

In late October, an active-shooter exercise is planned at the Monroe County courthouse.

Judge Todd Ziegler, who chairs a county committee that is planning the drill, says preparations for an emergency have been discussed in the past, but this is the first time employees in his county will practice those procedures.

Ziegler says county law enforcement wants courthouse workers to be more pro-active if unexpected gunfire occurs in the building.

Ziegler expects only courthouse workers and local attorneys to participate. According to FBI experts, the number of mass shootings in the U.S. has risen dramatically over the last three years.
