They know that some mothers will be disappointed, but doctors and administrators at Mayo are ending the practice of letting babies be born underwater. Too risky to the health of the baby, according to two doctors’ organizations. The CEO of Mayo Franciscan in La Crosse, Joe Kruse, says no harm has come to babies who went through water births in La Crosse, Tomah, or Waukon. An average of 30 water births a year are performed at Mayo in La Crosse out of four million done around the U-S. Mayo will still permit mothers to relax in a tub of water just before the actual birth.
