12-year-old killed in Vernon County UTV accident

A 12-year-old dies from injuries after a UTV accident Wednesday afternoon near Hillsboro.

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson and Coroner Betty Nigh said in a news release that a 911 call came in around 2:30 p.m. for a crash on private property near Kouba Valley Road in the Town of Greenwood in rural Hillsboro.

The investigation determined that the UTV was on gravel going slightly downhill when the driver lost control while taking a right turn. The UTV overturned.

There were only two people in the UTV, the 12-year-old and an 11-year-old. According to the release, both went to Emplify Health by Gundersen Hillsboro Area in Hillsboro. One went by private vehicle and the other by Hillsboro Area Ambulance.

The 12-year-old had critical injuries and died at the hospital.

The 11-year-old received non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.

Neither of their identities were released.

Investigation of the crash continues by the sheriff’s office, coroner’s office and the Wisconsin DNR.
