Second competency report ordered for man accused of killing roommate, hiding corpse

A second competency hearing is ordered for a La Crosse man accused of killing his roommate then hiding the corpse last year.
John Stumlin refused to appear at his hearing Tuesday morning before Judge Ramona Gonzalez.
Stumlin is currently in the Mendota Mental Health Institute.
His attorneys objected to a competency report prepared for the hearing. Online records show that Vincent Rust told the court that Stumlin believes he’s not competent and that he wants a second evaluation.
After testimony from Dr. Isabella Campanini, who wrote the report, Judge Gonzalez ruled that Stumlin is entitled to an independent evaluation and ordered the second report.
Stumlin was arrested last August in the death of Daniel Riordan, and for hiding the Riordan’s body at the south La Crosse mobile home park where they lived.
He’s charged with First Degree Intentional Homicide and Hiding a Corpse.
Stumlin will remain at Mendota and continue his treatment.
