Tornadoes reported in Houston, La Crosse counties, power outages reported in Winona

Tornado sirens sounded Wednesday evening as seven tornadoes developed out of a storm system that also produced a large amount of rain in the region.

National Weather Service Local Storm Reports said that the first report came in at 5:22 in Fillmore County near Bratsberg by the Houston/Fillmore County line.

Thirty minutes later, a tornado was on the ground near Zumbro Falls in Wabasha County.

The next report had a tornado on the ground three miles south of Hokah via a report at 6:05 p.m. to the 911 Center for Houston County.

Winds knocked down a utility pole on Main Street in Hokah shortly before the tornado report.

At 6:13 p.m., there was a tornado three miles south of Lake City in Wabasha County.

At 6:50 p.m. a radar-indicated tornado was reported near the St. Joseph area in La Crosse County.

Four minutes later, another tornado report, both radar indicated and visually seen, near County M in Barre Mills.

The final tornado call came in at 7:18 p.m. from law enforcement for one on the ground about five miles east of Eitzen on the Minnesota/Iowa border.

There’s no immediate word of any damage.


The storms knocked out power to nearly 3,400 Xcel Energy customers in the Winona.

Winona County Emergency Management cautioned drivers as the outage shut down many of the traffic lights in the city.

Roughly 200 customers of MiEnergy were without power in southeastern Minnesota according to their outage map.

Electricity returned to all but a few by later Wednesday evening.


Heavy rains in La Crosse covered streets in the city with several inches to a few feet of water.

The MTU suspended bus service in the city for about an hour and 45 minutes until the streets cleared.
