Should Wisconsin pick a state meat?

As I See It

I talked with Wisconsin state Sen. Brad Pfaff earlier this week about deeming things the state “something.”

Like the state bird is the robin. The state insect is the honey bee — though Pfaff suggested it should be the mosquito. The state drink is milk. And the state tree is the sugar maple.

But Wisconsin gets a little specific for other things.

The state’s domestic animal — the dairy cow. Wildlife animal — the white-tailed deer. And, of course, the state animal is the Badger.

What Pfaff and I joked about is that there needs to be a state meat.

Now, a couple years ago, the Legislature debated over a state cheese. But if they couldn’t agree on what cheese, how would they ever agree on a state meat — and should they even try?”

I think it brings attention to what the Legislature does. And, on La Crosse Talk, Pfaff helped explain the legislative process.

Going this route — naming a state meat — I don’t think any part of Wisconsin can claim it’s more meat than any other.

Oddly enough, meat might be less decisive than cheese, where Colby wanted the rights, but maybe Westby had something to say about that.

But what that state meat should be, that’s a good debate to have.

Weirdly, it might even be on the state list already. Cow is there, and the state meat could likely come from that — Pfaff was down with hamburger. There’s also the white-tailed deer. Venison as the state meat?

I’m guessing the state meat won’t be a veggie burger. What do you think it should be?

As I see it, I’m Rick Solem.
