Two sides of the social media coin in Minnesota lawmaker shootings

As I See It

It’s a little confusing to see Congressman Derrick Van Orden’s comments regarding the shooting of two Minnesota lawmakers over the weekend.

On one hand, his official Facebook page rightfully condemns the attack along with all forms of political violence and intimidation and that there’s no place for that in America. He also said he and his wife are praying for the victims and their families.

When you look at his personal Facebook page, it is a different story.

In a Sunday post, he claimed, without evidence, that the person who did the shooting “decided to murder and attempt to murder some politicians that were not far left enough for them.”

He also replied to a comment on Monday afternoon, when much more was known about the suspect, Vance Boelter, with a photo that misidentifies a person wearing a shirt that says Resist on it as Boelter implying he’s a liberal.

How about instead of the rhetoric and name calling on all sides, go with the first message against violence of any kind and having a care for the victims and their families and let justice run its proper course however it may play out.

The killer is just that-a mentally ill man.
His political beliefs, if he has any, are of no consequence any more than his beliefs on how to decorate your house or how to raise children.

Lee Harvey Oswald was a communist sympathizer who was also, foremost, a mentally ill man. The Luigi man who murdered the United Health Care executive attracts cult-like liberal young women and some supportive left-wing men on-line.
He’s still just a ruthless, coward killer.

Democrats and Republicans alike are wrong if they try to enlist support for their beliefs by pointing at the actions of a suspect about whom we know little at this point. Even after we know much more, following his trial, do any of his beliefs really matter? He’s a killer, one of many who lurk world-wide and for whom we must remain vigilant.

It seems this column is substantially based on an “X” post by a person named “Dan White” whose credentials to have an opinion on this matter are not presented to the reader. Is “Dan White” in some sort of an official position or is this just more WIZM “here’s what we want you to believe today.”
