Wisconsin DOT adjusting La Crosse area construction, as state track meet comes to town
Athletes, coaches, parents and spectators should anticipate how they’re getting into La Crosse and UW-L for this week’s WIAA State Track Meet.
The meet runs happens Friday and Saturday.
With construction projects happening throughout the area, having 20,000 people getting to and from the area could get messy.
WIZM reached out to the Wisconsin DOT to see if any of those projects would be halted for the meet.
This is what the DOT said:
- Signing and message boards will be deployed on the Interstate and in the city to help direct meet traffic.
- Incoming traffic will be advised to use Exit 3 to avoid the detour. Outgoing traffic can use eastbound WIS 16 and other routes to the access the Interstate.
- Two lanes of eastbound WIS 16 will be open at the time of the track meet.
- Work at the La Crosse Street/Losey Boulevard intersection will be halted during the track meet and the intersection will be open.
- We are providing traffic routing information to WIAA for meet participants and attendees.
La Crosse Police are planning for more traffic throughout the entire city on those days due to the meet.
The department wants to remind people to be patient and anticipate taking longer than usual to get through the traffic congestion.
They’ll have additional staff as well as regular patrol staff available to help untangle any snarls in traffic.
Allowing extra time for travel is one of the department’s suggestions.
To help make traffic a bit more bearable, there are four different routes to get to the university.
There are ones for each direction-north, south, east, and west. The maps display a preferred route, an alternative route, and roads undergoing construction.

Parking at UW-La Crosse
Once at UW-L, university police and parking staff direct drivers to parking lots.
There are two ways to park, either with a permit or the Passport Parking mobile app.
The university said it highly recommends purchasing a permit and downloading the app before arriving on campus.
