As I See It
Time to go fishing

I see the La Crosse Park and Rec Department in a couple of weeks is starting Youth Fishing Days-an opportunity for kids to learn hands-on the fundamentals of fishing.
I like this opportunity for a couple of reasons. One, it gets kids to spend time outdoors gaining knowledge about an activity that can last them a lifetime. You never know what you might catch or see on those trips-even over to Pettibone Lagoon.
I may sound a bit like a curmudgeon, but it also gets them away from their phones. They’re the ones doing it, not watching a video of someone else doing it.
If you live in La Crosse, think about signing your kids up. They may really enjoy it.
If you don’t live in La Crosse, see if there’s any similar programs in your area. A lot of organizations put on clinics or kids fishing events throughout the year.
And if you can’t find one, get a couple of people together and start one.
The nice thing about fishing is that most everyone I’ve met, from the big-time professionals to an old man sitting on the bank pulling in bluegills by the bunch, they all share a piece of their knowledge about the sport.
Get outdoors and enjoy.
