The City of Onalaska began work on Tuesday to place a roundabout at a busy intersection.

It’s going in at County PH and Theater Road.

Now that construction is underway, Theater Road from Midwest Drive to Highway 16 closes for the duration of the project.

The city suggests either using East Main Street or Highway 16 as detours.

Access to businesses along Theater Road and at the intersection of County PH is open during construction. Drivers may need to adjust their normal traffic patterns to get to those properties according to the city.

Completion of the roundabout is set for early August.

In the South, projects like this at extremely busy traffic points are done in the overnight hours under floodlamps. This enables the normal daytime traffic flow to continue with as little disruption as possible.

It seems that positioning 6-8 floodlamps around the intersection would allow all-night work nicely with nighttime cooler temperatures for the workers.

Has any Onalaska City official asked the General Contractor if this job could be done at night?
I just remember how the Green Coulee roundabout took forever to get done at another high traffic volume intersection.

I think that a traffic light would have been more appropriate here.

Leaving that McDonald’s wLuke be a nightmare sandwiched between traffic lights. It’s already not great.

Another thing they need to do once 16 is complete, sync the traffic lights!
It also would be great to include a tturn arrow from 157 on to 16. People do not let you merge!

Most of the time it is easier to cut through Planet Fitness parking lot and get onto 16.
